Vape juice is a liquid product that is used in a variety of vaping devices. It is also called “e-liquid”, or “e-juice”, and is available in many different flavors to suit the preferences of different user. And they can come with different nicotine levels. But there are e-liquids that contain no nicotine.
Vape juice ingredients mainly consist of PG(propylene glycol), VG(vegetable glycerin), nicotine, water, and flavorings. PG and VG are the dominant ingredient in vape juice, account for 90%. You can find various vape devices and e-juice options in vape shops. The article will further explain the ingredients and their functions in the most common vape juice.
Vape Juice Ingredient
PG(Propylene Glycol)
PG, or Propylene Glycol, is one of the main ingredients in vape juice. It is a colorless, odorless and limpid liquid with a faintly sweet taste. PG is usually used in the food industry and as an ingredient in many medicines. You can ususally find them in beverages, baked goods, and other household consumables.
PG from e-juice is a product that can easily be ingested. PG can enhance flavors and leave vaper a throat hit that resembles cigarette smoking. PG is much less dense than VG. It is considered that PG is safe for humans, and it does not pose a health risk to humans.
Nonetheless, some people believe it’s harmful as formaldehyde is a product of PG vapor degradation. Some vapers are concerned about aldehydes (acrolein and formaldehyde) present in the vaping process. However, aldehydes are present in much higher levels in cigarettes and cigars. What’s more, there’s no scientific consensus on whether aldehydes can cause acute respiratory issues or not.
Of course, there are many e-liquids without PG for vapers to choose from.
VG(Vegetable Glycerin)
VG or vegetable glycerin is a clear, odorless liquid with a mild sweet flavor. As a non-toxic and viscous liquid, it is very common in food ingredients. For instance, it’s commonly used as a humectant (to keep things moist), sweetener, solvent, and so on.
Additionally, it is one of the most common ingredients in e-juices, which is responsible for producing the vapor in your vapes. Namely, more vegetable glycerin means more vapor.
VG is completely safe. It’s usually combined with PG. Both VG and PG are important ingredients in vape juices, and their ratio can affect the quality of vapor. If you want big and dense vape clouds, the e-juices with a higher VG:PG ratio is the best option.
Nicotine
Nicotine is the basic ingredient in many e-liquids, extracted from tobacco plants. This is a unique substance due to its stimulant and relaxant properties. In the past, tobacco was used for ritual ceremonies. It is also used as a medicinal plant to treat common cold symptoms, cure wounds. And in Europe, it was even used to treat ulcers and basal cell cancer.
As a vape juice ingredient, nicotine has two basic forms: Freebase nicotine and nicotine salts. The latter one comes in more nicotine strengths than freebase nicotine, so it is more common and widely used. Furthermore, nicotine salts can provide a milder flavor than freebase nicotine. And nicotine is an addictive chemical.
Nicotine salts have similar nicotine strengths to tobacco cigarettes, while freebase nicotine hits the throat harder than nicotine salts. Thus, if you vape freebase nicotine, you perhaps won’t choose nicotine strengths greater than 18mg/ml. Users who only vape 3-4mg/ml of freebase nicotine could vape more than 16-18mg/ml of nicotine salts.
Vape juices not only come in a variety of flavors but also have different nicotine strengths. You can figure out e-liquids with 0mg, 6mg, 12mg, 18mg, 24mg, and 32mg on the market.
Water
Water is one of the ingredients of vape juice. Obviously, water help contributes to the consistency and viscosity of the e-liquid, but not the flavor. If you add more water, you will dilute it more.
Flavorings
Many vape juice manufacturers will not specify the flavorings they use out of protecting their recipes. Vape juices come in many flavors, from fruit flavors such as mango, strawberry, or pineapple to menthol, cream, or just tobacco flavor.
We suggest that you’d buy vape juices that contain food-graded ingredients.
How to Make Vape Juice by Yourself?
Although there are many flavorful e-juices to choose from in the vape shop, many vapers will opt to make their own e-juices. Perhaps they want to have more control over what they are vaping.
Homemade e-liquids are a great solution for vapers who want to vape different e-liquid flavors.
Vape juices are quite simple to make, and you won’t need many ingredients. You mainly need to mix two basic ingredients: PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin). Then, you need nicotine and flavor concentrate.
At first, you can find out DIY e-juice flavoring recipes online. Secondly, you need to get both VG and PG and add flavorings into the solutions. And next, you need to add nicotine into the solutions (don’t add nicotine if you want to make a non-nicotine e-liquid). After you mix all these components, shake the bottle and leave it aside for a few hours.
