How to Know Your Coil is Burnt

The coil may be burnt for a couple of reasons, and burnt hits are main culprits in throat burn. When you experience any throat burn, it indicates that your coil is burnt and needs to be replaced.

However, a better way of discovering the burnt coil is through the flavor. A burnt coil often loses its original flavor. A burnt coil often tastes unpleasant in the throat. After a couple of puffs, the taste of burnt coil affects the original flavor that should be experienced during the hit. Another sign of a coil is a drop in vapor production. For example, the amount of vapor produced during vaping is drastically lowered.

Occasionally, when you have just replaced a burnt-out coil, you can also get a burnt taste. Sometimes this will disappear after a few puffs, but at other times, you perhaps need to replace the vape juice.

Why Does Your Coil Taste burnt?

If you want to avoid burnt coils, knowing why coils get burnt is the most important thing.

First, think about when you are vaping but not getting a burnt taste. When the battery provides the electricity to the coil and then it gets hot. The heat generated by the coil is taken up by the e-juice, which is soaked in the wick, and the coil turns the e-juice into vapor. Because the e-juice there can take up some of the heat energy generated by the coil, the temperature of the coil won’t be too high.

When the e-juice in the wick has been vaporized, the wick dries out a little. However, you have a tank full of e-juice surrounding the coil, and this is constantly replacing the e-juice in the wick. This means that when you go to take another puff, the wick is soaked again, and everything works normally.

But what happens when there is no e-juice in the wick, or just not enough? If you push the fire button and then the coil heats up. As a result, the temperature of the coil can increase. This leads to two (equally unwanted) things happening:

The e-juice remaining in the wick gets “overheated,” heating up to an excessive degree and causing the PG to break down into formaldehyde. But formaldehyde tastes absolutely gross.

There is nothing to protect it from heat, and the wick is directly exposed to the glowing-hot coil. The wick will burn as it’s probably made of cotton. If the wick is completely dry, it would literally erupt in the flames. Surely, burning cotton also tastes horrible.

Ways to Stop Your Coil from Burning

From the above, it’s essential to ensure that there’s always e-juice in the wick when we vape. This means you shouldn’t “dry burn” your coils. Currently, most wicks are made from cotton and will get burnt if there is no e-liquid to soak it.

A burnt coil will taste and smell pretty nasty, we should take some measures to protect the coil. Thus, how can we prevent your coil from burning out?

Here are 5 ways to keep your coil fresher for longer and to avoid the burnt taste in your throat.

Prime You’re a Higher Coil

Priming the coil is an essential step to prevent the coil from burning. When you get a new coil and a fresh e-juice, you must be desperate to taste it. But you must remember to prime your coil, otherwise, you can risk burning it out. The standard procedure for using a new coil is to prime your coil and then sock the wick in the juice and ensure that they are saturated. Leave it for about 5-10 minutes before you take the first puff.

Lower the wattage

One way to prevent your coil from burning out quickly is to vape at a lower wattage. Higher wattage produces more vapor and offers thick clouds. However, it negatively affects the coil. The wick will dry faster, and you will run the risk of burning the coil and making a dry hit. Setting lower wattage, means the time and power required for the wick to re-absorb vape juice reduces, which means you can v vaporize more frequently without fear of a burning wick or coil.

Try e-juices with a Higher PG level

Vegetable Glycerine(VG) and Propylene Glycol(PG) are the two basic components of e-juices. VG features a high viscosity, which makes it slower to saturate the coil. PG can saturate the coil quickly due to its low viscosity, like water.

Because the VG can’t soak into the wicks easily, which can lead to the dreaded dry puff and burn out your wicks. The wick should always have enough e-juice, so it works normally during vaping. If you feel that your coils are constantly burning out, then you may need to switch e-juice with a higher PG ratio.

Stop Chain Vaping

Chain vaping is one of the major causes of burnt hits. It occurs when a vaper inhales continuously without giving the wick enough time to saturate before you take another puff. This act will give you a dry wick and damage the coil. Thus, give the wick time between puffs, so it’s fully saturated to absorb enough e-liquid.

If you were just taking a few puffs, then this wouldn’t be a problem, because you will stop vaping after a short session and give it time to recover. But if you are chaining it, your wicks will dry out. If the flavor starts to go, you just fill up the tank and leave the device for about 5-10 minutes before you go again.

Keep Your Vape Tank Topped Up

When the e-liquid level is low, it might not be able to soak into the wicks well, which can cause problems easily. This means that you should never “dry burn” your coils. Most wicks are made from cotton, and they will get ruined if they are heated without sufficient e-juice to protect them.

The simplest solution to this is to keep your tank topped up with enough e-liquid at all times. When the performance starts to get worse and the flavor diminishes, it’s probably time to refill. But if you want to try another flavor, please remember to empty the tank and then refill if you don’t want the flavors to mix.
